Cardmaking Background Papers, Vellums, Pearlescent.......A kaleidoscope of colour!

Yes, a true kaleidoscope of colour does open up to you when you start looking at all the cardmaking background papers, vellums and pearlescent papers which are available to you.

There is a vast selection out there, different thicknesses and different finishes. As you progress through your cardmaking journey you will discover which you are happiest working with.

Here's a taste of some of the different types of paper:

Background Papers can be either either plain or patterned. They often come in collections where all the colours and patterns compliment each other. Sometimes these papers are sold singularly or sometimes they are in packs. The price will vary according to the quality of the paper, the size, and whether it is by a popular designer.

Vellum is the name given to transparent paper, with a finish rather like tracing paper. Again vellums come in a range of colours, patterns and thicknesses.

Pearlescent papers have a lovely pearly sheen to them. Pastel colours work especially well in pearlescent. You can often buy strips of pearlescent paper rather than the more expensive full sheets.

Metallic or Foiled papers have either metal flecks in them or a foiled pattern that looks like shiny metal These can add a feeling of luxury to your work.

Glittered paper has a thin layer of glitter on it. These papers are especially good when used in making Christmas cards.

Velvet paper looks like a velvet fabric. It is not a paper a lot of cardmakers tend to use but you can produce some lovely cards with it.

Duo paper has a different colour of each side. Sometimes the colour is completely contrasting other times it can be just a different shade of the same colour. This can be very useful if you intend to do paper folding.

Handmade Paper: There are some beautiful specialist hand made papers avaliable. These are usually used when matting and layering on the front of a card.

Gift Wrapping: Don't overlook using sheets of wrapping paper in your work. You can pick up some lovely gift sheets at local shops very cheaply and these can make good background papers.
