Quilling - From Simple Strips of Paper to Beautiful Creations.....
Quilling, or Paper Quilling or Paper Filigree, as it is sometimes known, at its simplest, is the art of arranging rolled and shaped strips of paper to create designs.
It is thought that Quilling started as early as the 15th Century where it began as a decorative craft in religious houses who were too poor to afford more substantial gold and other precious metal icons.
Fast forward to today and Quilling has become a popular card making technique. You don't need a great deal of equipment to get started - just a few basic tools and supplies - and a lot of patience! You will need: 1. Quilling Paper: These are strips of brightly coloured paper which come in varying widths from 3cm (1/8th inch) to 10mm (3/8th inch). 2. Quilling Tools: Either a slotted quilling tool or a needle tool. Although some people do roll the paper by hand this is not recomended for beginners. 3. Quilling Work Board: You can buy commercial work boards for your projects. These are normally made from cork and have a clear plastic cover. Or you can make your own using some corrugated cardboard, a sheet of white paper and a peice of clear plastic. If you are working on a complex pattern you pin a copy of the pattern onto the work board. 4. Ruler: For measuring your paper strips. 5. Straight Pins: These are used to keep your quilled shapes in place on the pattern as you glue the shapes together. They are also used when creating certain types of quilling work. 6. Scissors: You need some scissors with sharp pointed blades for trimming any excess paper, cutting intricate shapes and for cutting fringes in the strips of paper when creating fringed flowers. 7. Glue: PVA or similar craft glue. Using the quilling tool the strips of paper are rolled to create shapes and these shapes then form the finished pattern. The most common use in card making is to create flowers which can either form the centre piece of the card or act as an embellishment.
