Making your own gives you greater choice over the size you want to work with, the colour, the type of card and the weight of card. Making your own cards will be cheaper than buying ready made cards. Cardstock can be purchased in packs or loose at many traditional shops or online. Always try to work with a good quality card of approximately 160gsm, although some coloured card will be heavier. Flimsy card will often not carry the weight of any artwork you put on top of it, such as Metal work or heavily embossed panels. When you try and stand the card up it will buckle or topple forward. To make your own Single Fold Cards you will need: -Paper Trimmer, Craft Knife and Self-Healing Mat or Scissors. -Metal Ruler. -Pencil. -Fine Tip Embossing Tool. -Bone Folder (a plastic tool like a small spatula) 1. Cut the card to your required size. You can either use a paper trimmer or a craft knife on a self-healing mat. If you do not have these tools then a good pair of scissors will do. Measure the centre of the card and put a pencil mark at the top and bottom of the card. 2. Line up the ruler with the pencil marks and using the fine tipped embossing tool gently score along the ruler down the centre of the card. If you have a paper trimmer it will have a scoring blade and you can use the trimmer's groove as your guide. We will call the groove made in the card the "valley" and the other side the "mountain". TIP: If you under-score the card it will not fold neatly and if you over-score the fold will be too floppy. 3. Keep in mind that the "mountain" should be on the inside of the card. Press the 2 outer edges of the card together and gently fold the card. 4. Run the flat side of the bone folder along the fold to give a neat, crisp edge. If you don't have a bone folder than try using a flat sided knife or a kitchen spatula. TIP: Some card has a right and a wrong side to it. Make sure you have the right side up when you are scoring it. TIP: Some card has a grain on it - try to fold it the same way as the grain. This makes the finished card look better. Once you have made a few of your own Single Fold Cards you will see it really is as easy as 1-2-3-4!
