Tea Bag Folding - No Tea Bags and No Mess!

Tea Bag Folding is attributed as being "invented" in the Netherlands by a lady called Tiny van der Plas.

Tea bags in the Netherlands came in attractively designed paper envelopes. Using Origami techniques Tiny folded one of these to create a design to put on the front of her sister's birthday card. The art of Tea Bag Folding in card making was born!

Over the years this unique form of origami has developed and you can now buy Tea Bag Tiles to use.

On the right is a selection of folded Tea Bag Tiles (this is not a card!)

These are small squares of brightly printed papers. They are available in many designs and can be themed - the common thread through all of them is that the design is symmetrical.

There are many ways to fold these papers and each sheet will produce a different design depending on the way it is folded.

We would say that there are 3 basic fold - the Square Fold, the Kite Fold and the Triangle Fold.

For each of these folds you will need 8 identical papers and when folded together they produce a rosette effect to use on your card.

Once proficient in this technique you can go on to create flowers, birds, butterflies, and crosses.
